“I Am a Designer” Exhibition Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Sami Angawi and Showcases the Creativity of Jeddah International College Design Graduates
The Design Department at Jeddah International College organized the “I Am a Designer” exhibition in honor of the architect Dr. Sami Angawi, a leading figure in Islamic architecture and a pioneer in reviving the architectural identity of the Hijaz region. The exhibition was inspired by the concept of “Dar Al-Makkiyah,” Dr. Angawi’s home, which embodies a design philosophy rooted in authenticity, heritage, and identity. The exhibition carried the inspiring motto “I am a designer, determined to do my best work”, a phrase Dr. Angawi often repeated, reflecting his values of determination, creativity, and excellence in architecture.
The exhibition featured 26 innovative projects created by students of Interior Design and Graphic Design, who demonstrated a deep understanding of Dr. Angawi’s vision. The designs were infused with the spirit of identity, skillfully blending cultural roots with modern design elements. The students showcased a high level of professionalism and creativity, presenting projects that embodied a mature visual and intellectual awareness and an ability to incorporate heritage in innovative ways that meet contemporary aspirations.
The exhibition was organized as two separate showcases—one for male students’ work and another for female students’ work—providing each group a dedicated opportunity to highlight their unique talents and creativity.
The exhibition attracted a large audience, including architects, design enthusiasts, and prominent local figures, who expressed great admiration for the exceptional work on display. The event served as a platform for architectural and artistic dialogue and as a tribute to Dr. Angawi’s legacy, which has inspired generations of designers and creatives.
This exhibition is part of Jeddah International College’s ongoing commitment to promoting design as a tool for cultural dialogue and expression, as well as to embedding architectural concepts that are deeply rooted in heritage. It reflects the college’s dedication to fostering creativity and graduating designers with a conscious and responsible vision for a future that remains connected to our cultural heritage
